"Don't be selfish: don't live to make a good impression on others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourself. Don't think only about your own affairs, but be interested in others, too, and what they are doing.
Your attitude should be the same that Christ Jesus had. Though he was God, he did not demand and cling to his rights as God. He made himself nothing; he took the humble position of a slave and appeared in human form. And in human form he obediently humbled himself even further by dyeing a criminal's death on a cross. Because of this, God raised him up to the heights of heaven and gave him a name that is above every other name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, in heaven and on earth and under the Earth, and every time will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father." - Philippians 2:3-11
Do you remember the sin that cause Satan to fall?
It was Pride.
Satan became so proud of his position that he thought he was better than God. He took so much pride in himself that he thought creation deserved to worship him. He then rebelled against God so that he could rule.
What did Jesus show coming to this earth?
"He made himself nothing; he took the humble position of a slave"
Christ is to be our example, and like this verse says, "Your attitude should be the same that Christ Jesus had". Tell me, forget leaving all glory and honor in heaven, how many of you would be willing to just leave your house, clothes, car, and everything else and go live with the sinners? I can tell you right now, not many of us - myself included. :? This comparison doesn't even do Christ justice. Compared to his honor and glory, compared to the unspeakable wonder of heaven, living in a twenty-bedroom mansion down here is the same as living in a garbage can - they’re both so far away from what he deserves that there on the same level. We can't even imagine the kingdom that Christ came from to suffer and died for us down here. But he did it - and showed the most amazing humility in all of the universe.
"Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourself"
Forget all of this super important stuff, I can't even remember the last time I put my sister before myself and offered to do the dishes for her so she could finish her homework. Can any of you think of a time like this?
"Don't think only about your own affairs, but be interested in others, too, and what they are doing."
Now I think this one gets me the most. Because I'm so wrapped up in myself and what I'm doing, I often don't pay attention to others and their needs. I put myself and what I'm doing first and just ignore everyone else. For example, there's been many times when I've been working on something or just reading, and everyone in the house is looking for the car keys or something. Eventually one of them asks me, but subconsciously I don't attach any importance to what they say, I just mindlessly answer no, because I'm too busy with what I'm doing right now. And so they keep looking for another 10 minute before they find them. Now had I stopped and said to myself, "what they're doing is more important than me reading" I could have devoted a whole 30 seconds to realizing I knew where the keys were, and just told them. Now this is a very simple example, but I'm sure you get the picture. We are to be focused on God's will, and second the people around us - if there is any time left then we can devote it to ourselves. This is a totally foreign concept to the world which says, "look out for number 1", but it is something that we need to work on. After all, we can't love others if we're spending all of our time focusing on ourselves.
"And in human form he obediently humbled himself even further by dyeing a criminal's death on a cross. Because of this, God raised him up to the heights of heaven and gave him a name that is above every other name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, in heaven and on earth and under the Earth, and every time will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. "
Because of Satan's pride, he was cast down from heaven and will one day be thrown into the lake of fire.
Because of Jesus humility, he was given a name that is above every other name.
I know which of these I'm going to ask God to start helping me with. After all, we don't just wake up one day and decide we're going to be perfect people. No, we go to God with our filthy rags and ask him to make them white as snow. So I am going to ask God to help me be humble so that I can show his love. :D
